About Kamigata Ukiyo-e
Kamigata ukiyo-e are ukiyo-e woodblock prints produced primarily in Osaka from the latter half of the Edo period through the early Meiji period; they feature few depictions of beautiful women or landscapes, and consist almost entirely of actor prints depicting kabuki plays performed at Dotonbori area.
Characteristics of Kamigata Ukiyo-e
Most Kamigata ukiyo-e are actor prints; unlike Edo ukiyo-e, depictions of beautiful women and famous landscapes are rarely seen. In the Kamigata region, there was likely a traditional cultural belief that paintings were original works created by hand and were meant to be enjoyed by the upper classes. While actor ukiyo-e were eventually accepted to some extent, it seems that original hand-painted works remained the mainstream for depictions of beautiful women.
The Beginnings of Kamigata Ukiyo-e
Full-color woodblock prints (nishiki-e) were invented in Edo in 1765 and spread throughout the city in the blink of an eye. These were the first full-color paintings that became accessible to the common people.
A quarter-century later, ukiyo-e entered its golden age. Then, in the late 18th century—just before artists such as Utamaro, Hokusai, and Sharaku rose to prominence—ukiyo-e prints, known as Kamigata ukiyo-e, began to be produced in the Kamigata region (Kyoto and Osaka) as well.
