To Cut Is to Honor the Ingredient
Even within the same genre of actor prints, there are significant differences between those from Edo and those from Kamigata.
A characteristic of Kamigata ukiyo-e is that, unlike Edo ukiyo-e, it is not flashy but rather depicts subjects as they are with thick, heavy lines. Additionally, the strong gaze of the subjects—which becomes an integral part of the composition—is another defining feature.
We portray actors without idealizing them, capturing their natural expressions and human qualities. We also prefer scenes such as stage greetings and those that emphasize their authentic, human presence.
