Even prints with the same design can differ greatly in value and character depending on when they were printed and which blocks were used. This page explains the differences between first editions, later editions, subsequent printings and reproductions.
■ 初摺（しょずり） / First Edition
版木が彫られて最初に摺られた作品を初摺といいます。線が鋭く、絵師や版元の意図した色や摺りの工夫がそのまま表れているため、最も高く評価されます。
Prints made from the first impressions of newly carved blocks. The lines are sharp and the colors and printing effects intended by the artist and publisher appear as designed, so they are the most highly valued.
■ 後摺（あとずり） / Later Edition
人気のある作品は、同じ版木を使って繰り返し摺られました。後摺では、版木の摩耗によって線が太くなったり途切れたりするほか、手間のかかるぼかしや空摺が省かれたり、色が変えられたりすることがあります。
Popular designs were printed repeatedly from the same blocks. In later editions, lines may thicken or break due to wear, labor-intensive gradations and embossing may be omitted, and colors may be changed.
■ 後版（あとはん）/ Subsequent Printings
オリジナルの版木の一部が紛失したり、あるいは客からの要望を踏まえて、構図を微妙に変更して一部を変更したものを後版という。いずれの場合にも、オリジナルの版木を使用されてため、後版はオリジナルと同等に扱われるが、経済価値は低下する。
A “Subsequent Printings” refers to a print in which part of the original woodblock is missing, or in which the composition has been slightly altered to accommodate a customer’s request. In either case, since the original woodblock is used, subsequent printings are treated as equivalent to the original, but their economic value is lower.
■ 復刻 / Reproduction
明治以降に、原画をもとに新たに版木を彫り直して摺られた作品を復刻といいます。当時の作品とは別物として扱われ、価格も大きく異なります。
Works printed from newly carved blocks based on the originals, from the Meiji period onward, are called reproductions. They are treated as different from period prints, and their prices differ greatly.
