上方浮世絵の多くは役者絵ですが、その中にもさまざまな種類があります。作品を選ぶ際の手がかりとして、当店で取り扱う主なジャンルをご紹介します。
Most Kamigata prints are actor prints, but there are many different types among them. Here we introduce the main genres we handle, as a guide for choosing works.
■ 役者大首絵 / Actor Portraits (Ōkubi-e)
役者の顔や上半身を大きく描いた作品です。上方絵ならではの、役者を美化しない写実的な表情や力強い眼差しを最もよく味わえるジャンルです。
Prints that show an actor’s face or upper body in close-up. This is the genre in which you can best appreciate the realistic, unidealized expressions and powerful gazes characteristic of Kamigata prints.
■ 芝居絵 / Theatrical Scenes
上演中の歌舞伎の一場面を描いた作品です。複数の役者が登場し、演目の筋や見せ場を伝えます。二枚続・三枚続など、複数枚をつなげて一場面とする作品も多く見られます。
Prints depicting a scene from a kabuki performance, often with several actors, conveying the plot or highlight of the play. Many are diptychs or triptychs in which several sheets form one scene.
■ 見立絵 / Mitate-e
古典や故事、別の物語になぞらえて役者を描いた作品です。実際の上演とは異なる趣向で描かれ、当時の観客の教養や遊び心がうかがえます。
Prints in which actors are depicted by analogy to classical literature, legends or other stories. Drawn with ideas different from actual performances, they reveal the wit and learning of contemporary audiences.
■ 摺物 / Surimono
狂歌の会や襲名、贈答などのために私的に制作された版画です。上質な紙に金銀や空摺などの技法を惜しみなく用いた、特に摺りの美しい作品が多いのが特徴です。
Privately commissioned prints made for poetry circles, name-succession ceremonies or as gifts. They often use fine paper and techniques such as metallic pigments and blind embossing, and many are exceptionally beautiful.
■ 番付・その他 / Banzuke and Others
芝居の配役を記した顔見世番付などの刷り物や、名所絵、戯画など、役者絵以外の作品も少数ながら取り扱っています。当時の芝居文化や大坂の暮らしを知る貴重な資料です。
We also handle a small number of works other than actor prints, such as kaomise playbills listing casts, landscape prints and caricatures. They are valuable materials for learning about theater culture and life in Osaka at the time.
